We’ve seen denim slashed and shredded with frayed hemlines.
They’ve demonstrated that grungy Nineties denim can actually be super soft and ultra-feminine.
It’s been mixed with acid-like colour knits, light lilac chiffon and dyed in a
minimalistic palette but for Fall/Winter 2013-14, the design duo; Marta Marques
and Paulo Almeida wanted to show that there is more to them than just a modern
revival of the Nineties. "We really wanted to explore the idea of
eveningwear but in a way that was very us.” For this season, Marques’ Almeida
took an approach to eveningwear by refining their grungy style and instead
constructing their pieces with much neater lines and tighter tailoring resulting
in more feminine silhouettes. However their slashing and fraying still remained
present but much more controlled as if there was logic behind the tear of the
denim as frayed skinny jeans with extensions to imitate a ball grown train
became eveningwear but still remained close to the duo’s roots. In contrast to
the skinny jeans, Marques’ Almeida featured beautiful illusions of billowing
wide-legged trousers, pleated at the waist to create a ball gown silhouette and
mid-length full skirts in the same style. Skirts were over trousers and
sheepskin shawls were wrapped over silk tops and dresses with the addition of
raw silk trouser suits resulting in a beautiful and sophisticated yet remarkable
collection for the design duo. Proving
why London is the hub for young design talent, Marques’ Almeida took a very
successful leap into a denim-filled eveningwear world. See the rest of the
